Sky Sports wrote:
Liverpool host the 213th Merseyside derby on Saturday afternoon as they welcome Everton to Anfield in the Premier League.

The encounter, which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1, is one of the most hotly anticipated in recent seasons with both sides finally conjuring up some form heading into the game.

David Moyes' men are arguably in better form, losing just once in their last nine games while Rafa Benitez's side have lost two in the same number of matches.

The Reds are bidding for their fourth straight clean sheet after stringing a trio of shut-outs together for the first time this season after recent results against Tottenham, Wolves and Bolton.

The Toffees, meanwhile, will be unfazed by Liverpool's new-found steadiness at the back having also failed to ship a goal in their last three league outings, winning each game in the process.

Liverpool, who are the bookies' favourites ahead of the clash, are unbeaten in their last six league meetings with Everton, and the visitors have not won at Anfield since September 1999.
Liverpool team

Right-back is Benitez's problem position ahead of the derby, with Glen Johnson (knee), Philipp Degen (calf) and Martin Kelly (ankle) all major doubts to make the squad.

That could see the Spaniard once again opt for Jamie Carragher at full-back, with Stephen Darby on standby to deputise the role while Daniel Agger is in contention for a start at centre-half.

The Reds also have problems on the left with versatile Brazilian Fabio Aurelio struggling with a knee problem, shortening Benitez's options on that flank.

With Yossi Benayoun still missing through a broken rib, Albert Riera could be handed a fourth consecutive start on the wing, with Emiliano Insua also set to keep his place behind him.

Besides Benayoun and Aurelio, Benitez has a healthy midfield to choose from and his central options could prove his most intriguing decision, with Lucas Leiva expected to get the nod ahead of Alberto Aquilani.

Steven Gerrard suffered no repercussions of his hamstring problem after returning against Wolves and should operate a free role behind striker David Ngog, with Fernando Torres (knee) still missing.

Everton team

David Moyes could have Joseph Yobo and Yakubu back in his ranks after the pair's return from international duty with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations.

The game will, however, come too soon for utility man Phil Jagielka, who may not return until later this month through a knee injury.

Influential midfielder Mikel Arteta could feature but is unlikely to be handed a start as a groin strain disrupts his comeback from a lengthy absence this season.

Elsewhere in midfield, Moyes has a full squad to choose from and could stick with the same side which battled to a 1-0 away win at Wigan last weekend.

Yakubu could make the bench at Anfield, but the fine form of loan signing Landon Donovan alongside top scorer Louis Saha could keep him out of the starting line-up.

Possible starting XIs

Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Insua, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Riera, Gerrard, Ngog.

Everton: Howard, Baines, Neville, Heitinga, Senderos, Cahill, Osman, Pienaar, Fellaini, Saha, Donovan.

PREDICTIONS:
skysports.com's prediction: 1-0
SKY BET odds: Liverpool 4/5, Draw 5/2, Everton 7/2
One to Watch: Tim Cahill

As always a big game this one, Liverpool 'haven't lost this year' a bit of a misleading statistic if you ask me, they still are not the Liverpool that was assaulting the top spot last season and Everton are getting back to strength with players returning from injury and for me i think Everton will leave Anfield with all 3 points.

This is a hell of hard game, Everton are in good form and we are getting there but our confidence need to improve seriously.

Just read the article from BBC but I have heard Aurelio is fit for this game and I don't want him to play because Insua is better and deserve to be in the line up for this match. And also we have to keep eye on Tim Cahill who is a fantastic header in the air and can cause us a lot of problem to deal with it. The Greek fella can do his job against Tim Cahill like he did against Kevin Davies last weekend.

Love to go to this game but I am stuck in Denmark. :(

COME ON LIVERPOOL!!

I can see Rafa using Lucas alongside Mascherano.

I believe we can go for a win here, without Torres we've been scoring more with Kuyt.

It will be a good match but I expect the pool to win because they're playing at home.

Glad to see Liverpool in action again, I guess it will not be an easy game but I'm confident Gerrard will score to get the 3 points needed in the battle for the 4th place.

Well Liverpool tend to do well in these derby matches. That said they were lucky the last time these two met. Everton were clearly the better side. Liverpool should win this with Everton playing well and losing yet again...

Why would anyone want to get at the end of Gerrard's crosses? My head would get destroyed if I tried to.

Soto sent off - right decision, even though I think Felliani should of gone as well, with his tamp on Soto's leg.

Kuyt with the breakthrough from a Gerrard corner! We scored and we've got 10 men!

Babel on for Ngog!

FT
Liverpool 1 - 0 Everton

was a scrappy game as expected but neither team imposed themselves or took control of the game, some harsh challenges but i think the ref did a good job. The greek fella left the ref no choice double footed challenge and didn't get the ball.

Livepools goal was a good corner but howard should have had it covered poor goal keeping on his part and an opportunistic header from Kuyt.

could have lended up a draw from a few chances but liverpool were resolute at the back and held tight. a solid performance from both teams but nothing really stood out.

Massive win for us and it just proves that Torres isn't the only goalscorer in the team!

Scrappy game and yes I can see why the player got sent off but the ref had dug himself into a hole he had lost the plot by then and let too much go he should've stamped his authority on the game sooner, he knew it was a derby. The game was never going to be a classic but still 3 points and the red half of Liverpool will be celebrating tonight.

Well it was one dirty game to be honest. Gerrard showing his true colours as well sliding on to Pienar when he was already going down.

Good win for Scum though, they deserve it I guess considering they were with 10 men on the pitch. Everton had their chances but were criminally wasteful.

Happy with the result and it was very important for us. Great battling game but of course it was dirty game, that's derby and both of players did shake hands after the match.

It is the fact that Martin Atkinson can't handle this derby game, he was awful.

i think the ref did a good job.

What's good job? Everton should have 2 players sent off in the first half, look at Pienaar for what he did to Mascherano, he could have break the leg easily! And dirty fecker Felliani should have been sent off for what he kicked the ball at Kuyt's face and also he put his feet on stamp at Greek defender'd leg, that was fact. But I cannot argue about Greek's sent off because it was clear 2 feets challenge. I accepted the red card.

Gerrard showing his true colours as well sliding on to Pienar when he was already going down.

Oh dear, that's load of bloody feckin' rubbish because he won the ball perfectly and you can see it perfectly on replay, fact!!

I think MX has a point with Gerrard. From what I seen, Gerrard smiled and laughed after he slid into Pienaar, so I think Gerrard meant to do that challenge. Well, that's just my opinion on it really.

Agree 100% with you there. IMO the referee let too much go early on, never really had control of the game.
